Castlefield · Manchester
A little café on a narrowboat, right in the heart of Castlefield — good coffee, homemade bakes, and the Bridgewater Canal for a view.
The idea
Tucked along the Bridgewater Canal in Castlefield, The Coffee & Cake Boat is exactly what it sounds like: a little café served from a narrowboat.
No shopfront, no queue out onto a busy street — just coffee, cake, and the water. It's the kind of place you find because someone told you about it, or because you happened to be walking the towpath at the right moment.
Because sometimes the best coffee shop is the one you have to find by the water.
The boat
A 58-foot narrowboat with a story. What started as a major renovation project became a cosy floating café — and, off the clock, a home too.
Owner Libby did the transformation herself, and it shows: the interior has a warm, Scandinavian-inspired character that feels more like a cabin retreat than a café counter. It's small, it's characterful, and every fitting earns its place.
Coffee
Coffee is the whole reason most people find the gangplank in the first place. Simple, done properly, and better with a canal view.
On the counter
Cake
Homemade, and often vegan — though the selection changes, so there's always a reason to check what's on the counter today.
Today's little joys
The experience
Pick up a coffee, grab something sweet and carry on along the canal — or simply stop for a moment and watch Manchester drift by.
Location
Castlefield is Manchester's original canal quarter — cobbles, railway viaducts and water where the city's industrial past meets a genuinely nice place for a coffee. The boat moors along the Bridgewater Canal, right in the middle of it.

Just an idea
One way it might go — not a schedule, just a nice way to spend a morning.
